They call her the hottest virgin in Nollywood but Adibeli Ify, a budding actress and a student of Open University, isn’t carried away with such appellation as she believes there may not be virgins in Nollywood anymore. She started her acting career at age 16 when she did a few scenes to earn N5000. Now, at 20, Ify looks to have her world cut out for her as she has featured in close to 20 films, with five of those as a leading character. Meet the Nollywood’s hottest virgin, the ever-smiling girl many have described as a dead ringer to Tonto Dikeh. She cut her teeth in movies like Blood Enemies, Online Babes, Sound of War and others.
The Beginning
Ify Adebeli has a cheery air about her that would get you thinking this is a girl that would find it hard to settle down at anything. But beneath that giggly, carefree, happy-go-lucky girl mien is a character as strong as a granite. She’s finding her feet in the industry but that hasn’t come about without her having to pay the price most of her colleagues paid.

You seem to have an affinity for comedies; why is that?

I wouldn’t call it affinity. Years ago, I found out that most of the scripts that were brought to me didn’t have comic relief; I was always given roles of a wicked man and I got to understand that most of my fans were not pleased with it. Some of them felt it was something real, and the consequence was that whenever I stepped out in public, I was caught in embarrassing situations. I then decided to be infusing comic relief even when I’m playing wicked characters because I’m a veteran screen writer. In the early 80s, we were operating in NTA Enugu, which was formerly Anambra Television Channel 50, so the talent is there, and I combined it with the wicked roles they were giving me. The result is that when you are watching me play a wicked role, you will still have cause to laugh, and ease your tension. In fact, I have achieved a lot by doing that.

To many Nigerian film lovers, the name Chioma Onyenwe might not ring a bell but this filmmaker says that she’s out to tell a ‘coming of age’ story. Though an economist by training, she says that her desire to make films dates back to her childhood days. Chioma, who is also a Programme Coordinator for the Africa International Film Festival (AFRIFF) speaks to OVWE MEDEME on the preparations so far, her debut feature film, 8 Bars & A Clef among other issues.
HOW are preparations coming for this year’s AFRIFF?
We are in the non-sleeping stage. Every hour counts. We are very busy. Nobody is sleeping anymore. We are waiting for the festival to start and then push it through till it finishes.
What is different from last year’s edition of the festival?
A lot of things are different this year, mainly because it is held within Lagos. Last year, the festival was held in Cross River State. In Calabar, we had that community feel. Everybody came together in one place but in Lagos, it is quite different. We are opening it up to everyone. There are a number of venues and a lot of activities. The film screenings have doubled as against last year. Also, the industry sessions are much. There is just so much happening in town throughout the week.

Air Peace and the Foundation of Ethnic Harmony in Nigeria ( FEHN ) will spend over N200 million on the training of newly crown Miss Nigeria: Miss Lessi Peter -Vigboro and others in non – violence and conflict management at the Emory University Martin Luther King Centre in Altanta.
The training in conflict management and non – violence according to the chairman of Air Peace and FEHN: Mr. Allen Onyema will equip the pageant and others to benefit from the three -tier training skills in resolving conflict related issues including insurgency and ethnic agitation in the northern part of the country.
The first leg of the training for the pageant alongside staff of FEHN and other capability builders will be handled by world acclaimed conflict resolution expert – Dr Bernard Lafayette Jnr, an ally of Dr Martin Luther King.

Upcoming singing sensation, Seun Akinnuga, simply known as Dimplez, is looking set to change the face of the music landscape of the country, not only by her singing talent but also by her attitude which may get the likes of Tiwa Savage or Seyi Shay going green with envy. Dimplez has just dropped her latest single ‘Kowole’ which means ‘drop the money’ and it is getting everybody talking about the person inside the act, called Dimplez.

The song is a contemporary hip-hop sound of the street, with a lot of danceable beats spruced with frenetic lyrics. “ I don’t come looking for love tonight, Kowole” the chorus chimes. It is a song telling her man that her interest is not about love but money. This got Potpourri asking if Dimplez is really a cash-on-delivery kind of girl.

Governor Wike bans street protests, condemns Biafra protest

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has banned all forms of street protests in the state, condemning the street protests by the Indigenous People of Biafra which have crippled commercial activities in the state. The governor declared : "let no one be in doubt of the resolve of the Rivers State Government and the security agencies to maintain law and order at all cost within the State and preserve the unity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria." In a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday night, Governor Wike decried the movement of protesters from neighbouring States into Rivers State, noting that they have inflicted injuries on other citizens going about their lawful businesses.

Chinwuba Ekwueme, 42, a father of three and a member of the Egede Neighbourhood Watch was on Friday, November 6, reportedly butchered by Fulani herdsmen in Egede, Udi Local Govt Area of Enugu State. The traditional ruler of Egede, Igwe Polycarp Oyigbo, lamented the recurrence of nomadic attacks against his subjects and wondered why government had not been able to offer measures towards saving them from these attacks. According to reports, The UK is planning to deport 29,000 Nigerians and they claim they are working with the Nigerian authority to do this. The people that they are deporting are those who don't have the right to remain in the country they said. And they say the deportation is necessary because of the migration crisis created by the troubled regions in the world.

Speaking about the planned deportation last month, the acting Nigeria High Commissioner in London, Olukunle Bamgbose, told Vice President Yemi Osinbajo

“I think about 29,000 Nigerians have been designated to be deported. We are insisting that due process must be followed before Nigerians are really removed from the UK to Nigeria” Bamgbose had said.

Uneasy calm in House over ‘choice’ committee positions

The sharing of committee positions has reopened wounds in the House of Representatives. Victor Oluwasegun and Dele Anofi write that the development, if allowed to linger, could widen the gulf between factions in the Green Chamber.
THE dust raised by the distribution of House of Representatives committees by Speaker Yakubu Dogara may take a longer time to settle. More than a week after Dogara named the committee chairmen and their deputies, not a few members of the Green Chamber are yet to come to terms on why the All Progressives Congress (APC) has no edge in the headship of the committees as the ruling party.
There have been mixed feelings in the lower legislative chamber penultimate week over the sharing of 96 standing committees. The ruling party got the chairmanship slots and 46 went to the rival Peoples Democratic Party. The other two slots were allocated to the other opposition parties.
Some members of the House have cried foul, saying Dogara’s choices tilted more to the PDP side, a platform that allegedly helped him to win the speakership position on June 9. Yet, others have justified the formula; attributing it all to politics.

At the mercy of fake doctors

The medical profession has been infiltrated by fake practitioners leading to avoidable deaths and complications. Innocent Duru in this report goes into the world of the dupes.

In a not too distant past, the existence of fake doctors was restricted to only private hospitals. Not anymore, the dupes have spread their poisoned tentacles into public hospitals. How?

Within the space of two months, two suspects Nwosu Angela Njide and Martins Ugwu Okpeh, were arrested. They had plied their nefarious credentials for a long time before nemesis caught up with them.

Angela,30, claimed that she had worked with the British American Tobacco (BAT) clinic, Ibadan; the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) and Rauz Hospital, Apo, Abuja, before she was arrested by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and handed over to the police. She is said to be the first female fake doctor to have been arrested by MDCN. Strangely, a presenter with Africa Independent Television (AIT), who was once her patient, described her as a caring ‘doctor’ whose kindness, belied her alleged criminal tendencies.

Forty-four-year-old Okpeh, on the other hand, had for nine years paraded himself as a medical doctor and even rose to become the chairman of a branch of the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) before he was arrested. The suspect, a secondary school certificate holder and father of five, confessed to having stolen copies of the medical and academic credentials of his childhood friend, Dr. George Davidson, a medical doctor based in Jos, Plateau State, and used same to secure employment in the Federal Ministry of Health. He was said to have been exposed by an anonymous petition that prompted the police to launch investigation into his activities.

: 224 killed in Russian plane crash

BREAKING NEWS: 224 killed in Russian plane crash

A Russian plane has crashed in Egypt with 224 people on board.
None of those on board survived the crash, according to Egyptian officials.
There had been previous reports from the crash site in the mountains of Sinai that voices could be heard from one part of the wreckage.
However, officials have now said that everyone on board, including 17 children, died in the crash.
The Airbus A-321 aircraft (pictured) was carrying 217 passengers and seven crew members and took off from popular tourist destination Sharm el-Sheikh.
The plane, operated by small Russian airline Kogalymavia and branded as Metrojet, was heading for St Petersburg in Russia.
Of the passengers on board, 214 were Russian and three were Ukrainian.
The plane disappeared from radar screens 23 minutes after its take-off time of 5.51am.
The black boxes from the plane, which record all the flight data, have been located. If intact, they will give an accurate picture of what happened in the moments before the crash.
The plane disappeared from radar when travelling at 31,000ft.
Relatives of the passengers have been frantically awaiting information from the airline’s desk at Pulkovo Airport in St Petersburg.
Earlier, there had been hopes of finding survivors in the wreckage after an Egyptian security officer said he could hear the voices of trapped passengers in one section of the plane. The plane reportedly split into two sections on impact.
Russia’s prime minister Dmitry Medvedev said on Twitter: “I am deeply shocked by the plane crash in the Sinai Peninsula. The tragedy will be thoroughly investigated, the families will receive aid”.

Three ‘small banks’ in danger, says CBN after stress test

A liquidity stress test conducted by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has revealed that capital position of ‘three small banks’ have fallen below regulatory capital requirement.
The test, contained in the CBN Financial Stability Report released yesterday, showed the Capital Adequacy Ratios (CARs) of the affected banks were below five per cent regulatory threshold.
The three banks are not among the domestic systemically important banks (D-SIBs), it said.
The report, which measured the lenders’ positions as at June this year, showed that the number of banks with CAR less than five per cent also increased from zero to three from December 31, 2014 to June 30, 2015. The CAR is a ratio of a bank’s assets to its risks
According to CBN’s Director, Financial Policy and Regulation Department, Kelvin Amugo, the liquidity stress test was conducted using the Implied Cash Flow Analysis (ICFA) and the Maturity Mismatch/Rollover Risk approaches to assess the resilience of the banking industry to liquidity and funding shocks.

Senate President, Bukola Saraki, yesterday lost his bid to stop his trial before the Code of Conduct Tribunal (CCT).
The Court of Appeal in Abuja dismissed the Senate President’s appeal challenging the tribunal’s jurisdiction over his trial.
He is standing trial on a 13-count charge of false asset declaration before the CCT).
In a split decision of two-to-one, the appellate court held yesterday that Saraki’s appeal lacked merit.
Justices Moore Adumein (presiding) and Mohammed Mustapha resolved the six issues raised in the appeal in favour of the respondents while Justice Joseph Ekanem dissented on the issue of whether an official of the Federal Ministry of Justice was competent to endorse a charge in the absence of the Attorney General of the Federation (AGF).
